May 18, 2017. A Chat with The Solitary Goose.

May 18, 2017.  A Chat with The Solitary Goose.  We were awakened by rain on the roof of Harvey this morning.  It rained, on and off, until about noon.  It also got colder.  The overnight low was 63. By 2:00 this afternoon, the temperature had dropped into the 40s.  We decided to walk to Julie's Cafe at the park entrance, a distance of half a mile.  After linner - cross between lunch and dinner - we then walked into the town of Fish Creek, taking pictures along the way.  The flower pictures are a little premature.  The flowers should be glorious in another few weeks.

There is a photo of a street which stops short of the water.  The picture shows an American flag.  Off in the distance, there is a pier extending into the water.  That is the pier behind our campsite.  I have taken pictures from the pier looking toward town, the boat docks and the same American Flag.  You have seen those pictures.  Now, you know what it looks like from the other side.

Our friend, the solitary goose is still swimming around in the cove near our campsite.  I've seen him several more times since I introduced him to you Saturday.  He is always alone, never with a partner. I am guessing that he lost his partner recently.  Otherwise, he would have paired up with another goose.  He may be molting, too, which means he is growing new flight feathers.  If so, he is unable to fly to a place where he might find another mate.  He is stuck, alone in a cove, with no other geese and unable to go to where other geese are.  He is alone with no one to honk to.  That makes me sad.

So, as we walked back to the campground, I took another picture of him.  He was floating serenely in the same area where we first saw him Saturday.  So, I whistled.  He cranked his head around to locate the source of the noise.  I whistled.  He looked.  That was our chat.  But, as I walked away, I couldn't help but think we had communicated for a brief moment.  I hope he felt a little less alone.  Maybe that will hold him until he gets his new flight feathers and finds himself another mate.  I hope so. Don't you?

Goodnight.
