May 14, 2011. It is day two and we are in Carrington, ND. We whizzed through Fargo and Jamestown this afternoon and settled here, in a bustling city park in Carrington, population 2071. This is a nine space RV camp with electricity and water provided. At twenty dollars a night, it's a bargain. But, if it's such a bargain, why are we the only ones here? Oh, yeah, this is North Dakota. There's nobody here.
North Dakota is a lot like Kansas. There are few towns, lots of cows and cropland. The eastern side is flat, though the elevation changes as we travel to the northwest. It is pastoral and prosaic. There is a calmness which washes over us as the fence posts, delapidated barns and cattle ponds roll past us.
Joe, Lily and Leah took a short ride on the horns of a buffalo statue in Jamestown. The folks here seem to make a big deal of the buffalo. There is a statue of one three stories high just off the highway. I think the movie, "Dances with Wolves" was filmed in North Dakota. We passed a herd of buffalo just outside of Jamestown. You need a strong fence to hold a buffalo. They've been known to swing their powerful heads from side to side and take out both wood and wire fences. I suppose if they have enough to eat within the fence, there's no reason for them to want out. If they do want out, they get out. Such is the strength and power of a buffalo.
We will cross over into Canada tomorrow, if I can find it. It is somewhere north of here, they tell me. Our target tomorrow night is Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, west of Regina, Saskatchewan.
