The Ferry Columbia, June 6, 2011

The Ferry Columbia, June 6, 2011.  We boarded the ferry about 8:30 tonight and made our way to our state room.  The room is larger than a jail cell, but not much.  It is also larger than Harvey.  We were pleasantly surprised by the bath.  The shower is actually as large as many you will find in a three-bedroom home. Certainly, it is larger than the shower in Harvey, which is about the size of a shoebox stood on its end.

The sun was low as we left the harbor.  I love to take pictures in low-light situations.  I hope you like these as much as I do.

We carried on lots of snack food, oranges, apples and bottled water.  However, there is also a snack bar and restaurant on board the ferry.  It's been a while since I had a good hamburger or a good hotdog.  I may just give the snack shop a try.

Many of the passengers reject the idea of a separate room for sleep.  Some brought tents aboard and set them up on the upper deck.  There, in sleeping bags, they spend the night.  The temperature has been dropping into the forties at night, so, depending upon the quality of the sleeping bag, it may get a tad chilly on the upper deck.  We actually got cold in our room until we learned that we hadn't turned the heat on.  I can imagine what it felt like out in the cold.

The ferry stops at 2:30 AM at Juneau, the capital of Alaska.  We've been to Juneau before.  I don't think I will get up to see it again.  Tomorrow, we port at Sitka for a couple of hours.  I would like to see the old Russian capital of Alaska.  I understand there is some interesting architecture there.
