October 17, 2014. Lewiston, NY.
October 17, 2014. Lewiston, NY. Lewiston has been named one of America's best small towns by Rand McNally. It rests 8 miles from Niagara Falls and has a population of about 3000 residents. We lunched and walked the streets of Lewiston today. The pictures above show how the residents and merchants get involved in the spirit of Halloween.
Lewiston was the jumping off place for the first major battle of the War of 1812. An American expeditionary force left Lewiston and battled the British at Queenston Heights in present day Ontario. The United States lost the battle, but the British still took revenge for the invasion of Canada by burning Lewiston to the ground. But for the help of local Tuscarora natives, the entire town would have been massacred. The Tuscarora fought a rear-guard action while the citizens escaped. Last year, a sculpture was dedicated in Lewiston recognizing the natives for saving the lives of many Lewistonians.
The plan is to leave here tomorrow and travel east, the entire length of the state. We will bypass Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady and Albany. If things go according to plan, we will be in Vermont tomorrow night. Along the way, we will be driving parallel the historic Erie Canal, a man made canal that originally connected New York City and Buffalo, NY, a distance of over 350 miles. It was the Canal, some say, that made New York America's greatest city, rather than Philadelphia.
The color holds on here. I hope it continues to hold on until we get to Vermont. The good news is that if we miss it in New England, we can just drive south until we catch up with it again.
