October 5, 2015. Back to Four Mile Creek State Park, NY, Near Niagara Falls. We like this park, too. We are encamped on the shore of Lake Ontario approximately 15 miles, as the crow flies, from Toronto. On a clear day we can see the skyline of Toronto. On a clear night, we can see the lights of Toronto. Today was not, and tonight is not clear. We know the view because this is our 3rd or 4th visit to this park. We like it for the views, the quietude, the quality of biking trails and the proximity to the quaint village of Lewiston, NY. Lewiston is in the uppermost corner of northwest New York state.
We crossed Ontario from Port Huron to Lewiston today, a distance of about 300 miles. As we entered Canada, we were asked by the border guard if we were carrying weapons or excessive amounts of alcohol or tobacco. We answered that we were not. He then asked if our vehicle had ever had guns in it? I don't know what the purpose of that question was, but I answered that it had not, to my knowledge. He wanted to know how long we had owned Harvey and I told him that we had owned him about a year. He waved us through the border and told us to have a good day.
As we passed through the U.S. border, we were asked none of those questions. Annie opined that it was odd that Canada asked whether we were carrying guns and the United States didn't seem to care. I've heard that border guards are trained to look for facial expressions which hint at deception. Maybe that was what the guard was doing. If so, I guess I have an honest face. That's good. In my line of work, that is a positive characteristic.
We will be here until, at least, Thursday morning. I reserved for three nights. We may want to stay longer if Hurricane Joaquim darts toward the U.S. coast. There has been 1000-year flooding along the southeast United States. Predictions are that Joaquim will turn east into the Atlantic and spare New England. If so, we will be in Vermont later this week.
