October 10, 2012, Palmyra, Joseph Smith and Mormon

October 10, 2012, Palmyra, Joseph Smith and Mormon.  We left Fourmile Creek State Park on Lake Ontario this morning, looped south to Palmyra and returned to the shores of Lake Ontario tonight at Fair Haven Beach State Park.  The first photo is the former and the last three photos show the Joseph Smith farm outside of Palmyra.

Joseph Smith founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, also known as Mormonism.  His family relocated from Vermont to Palmyra in 1817, when Smith was 12 years old.  There, his father built a cabin and began to farm a 100-acre plot.  The Smith family was deeply religious, but young Joseph foound himself wondering which denomination of Christianity represented the true interpretation of God's word.  In a series of angelic revelations, a new religion was born.  Mormonism accepts Jesus as the Son of God and touts Smith as a later-day prophet annointed by heaven to lead followers to return to the true faith.

Joseph Smith and his followers were presecuted in New York, moved to Ohio and again to Missouri.  The Saints were expelled from Missouri before resettleing in Illonois.  There, Smith was assassinated in 1844 while being held in jail.  He was 38.

The final picture looks toward "The Sacred Grove" where Smith said God and the Son appeared to him.  It is a beautiful place.

Tomorrow, we will travel through the Adderondack Mountains as we make our way to Vermont.  We've been around the edges of that range, but have never crossed it.  Tomorrow is the day for that.
