October 12, 2012 - Fair Haven Beach, Adirondacks to Vermont
October 12, 2012 - Fair Haven Beach, Adirondacks to Vermont. As we left Fair Haven Beach Park in New York this morning, the wildlife put on a display for us. There were a half-dozen deer grazing on the baseball field in front of a grove of trees. A couple looked our way, then went back to their breakfast. As we made our way out of the park, ducks and swans paraded by near the shore of a pond. They, too, were enjoying breakfast. It was as though they knew the camping season is at an end and they wanted to put on a show before winter sits in.
They are too late. Winter is here. The temperature will be in the twenties tonight. As we passed Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, it began to snow. It was actually more like a "light" hail, but that's close enough. The temperature at the time was 39, so it melted as soon as it hit the ground. Still, swans and deer, be warned. Summer is a distant memory and winter is near in the high country.
We stopped at Campbell's diner, near Forestport, NY, for lunch. We look for local eateries as we travel. We can eat at Wendy's in Kansas City. Campbell's had one waitress who served about thirty people. She was very efficient and the food was prepared in copious quantities. Annie couldn't finish her hot turkey sandwich. I, on the other hand, managed to down about twelve ounces of fish, fries and slaw.
The waitress spoke with a New Bedford accent. So, we played the Fred game. Our friend, Fred, will see someone on the street and conjure a life history for the person based on his appearance or his accent. So, I told Annie that the waitress was raised in Massachusetts and married a soldier from Forestport. Her husband has been deployed, so she came to Forestport to work in her husband's cafe. Later, as the waitress delivered the bill, I told her that we were trying to place her accent. I asked her where she was raised. "Right here, in Forestport," she answered. So much for my ability to place accents and divine life stories.
We are in Dorset, VT, tonight and will stay in this area for a couple of days.
