October 6, 2013. Travel to and a day in Manchester Center, VT. The weather has turned off blustery, cold and wet. You have seen days like this in the midwest, they're just usually in November.
You may remember our disappointment last year with the absence of color in Vermont. It wasn't a matter of timing. Locals told us that it was just a bad year. Not so this year. The trees are as beautiful as any we've seen in the five years we've been here in the fall.
Usually, yellow is the first color to show. Yellow is followed by orange. The final color is red, bright, radiant red.
We descended from Lake Ontario to I-90, the Mohawk River Valley and the Erie Canal. We followed the river for several hundred miles before turning north into Vermont. It is a drive we've made 6-8 times sometimes going one direction, sometimes going the other direction. It is a beautiful drive, even without the colors of autumn.
We have a favorite eatery here, The Little Rooster. We slept in and had a late breakfast there. We hit a few of the outlet stores and returned to the campground to watch football and nap.
Tomorrow we will drive a 100-mile circuit using Manchester Center as the hub. We will go to Pawlet, the first little village we tripped over our first trip to Vermont. There is a genuine country store there that sells everything from rubber boots to tomatoes to overalls to donuts. You have seen pictures of the store before and you may see pictures of it again. We will then drive about thirty miles to the stone house where Robert Frost wrote "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." From there, we'll drive to Weston, VT, home of the original Vermont Country Store.
After tomorrow, we will move on; don't know where or for how long. But stay tuned, I'll let you know.
