January 6, 2016. This Day Has Gone to the Birds.
January 6, 2016. This Day Has Gone to the Birds. So, here is how it works around here. When the Murphy Bed is down in T-Harvey, there is little room to move around. I wake up first and go to the bathroom. Then, I go to the passenger seat and pick up the iPad and look at the local newspaper. Eventually, Annie will stir and ask what's in the news. This morning, I told her that Alex Gordon has re-signed with the Royals and that Ken Griffey, Jr, was likely to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame today.
She asked, "Is that it?"
"Well, the President has taken executive action to limit guns in the hands of those who might misuse them. State revenue is down in Kansas, thanks to the Governor's tax cuts. Who's surprised by that? If you cut taxes, revenue is going to go down. And, the stock market is in the dumpster."
She, "Is there nothing else?"
Me, "Not really."
She gets up, looks at her phone and says, "You knucklehead! Today is National Bird Day. That's what's in the news! What have you been doing all morning? I thought you were reading the news."
That's how I discovered that today is, indeed, National Bird Day. I can't help but wonder if other animals have their own day. Shouldn't there be a National Dog Day or a National Fish Day? What about species within the bird grouping? Shouldn't there be a National Woodpecker Day or a National Blue-Footed Booby Bird Day?
But, I took her meaning. This afternoon, we went in search of a bird to honor on this, its special day. Can you believe that on all of this 6000 acres there were only three birds. First, there was a mileormore who looked a lot like a blue heron. Then I found two homesick pigeons on a rooftop. That's it. On National Bird Day, there were three stinking birds.
So, maybe the Blue-Footed Booby Bird should be happy there isn't a day set aside to honor it. Having your own national day seems to be the path to extinction.

National Dog Day: August 26, 2016
National Catfish Day: June 25 every year since 1987 (couldn't find a generic Fish Day)
Blue-footed Bobby Day: June 17, 2011 (on the Galapacos Islands)
Couldn't find a Woodpecker Day.
Thank you, Google.
Also, www.daysoftheyear.com tells me that January is Oatmeal Month.
One more thing: It would have been apropos for Annie to call Malachi a "birdbrain" instead of a "knucklehead."
