May 14, 2016. This Ain't No Place To Be.

May 14, 2016. This Ain't No Place To Be.  The temperatures dropped into the 30s last night.  We awoke to a layer of frost around the edges of the windows.  It spit rain, then snow in the mid-morning.  All in all, it was a pretty miserable beginning to Saturday.

We stayed inside until mid-afternoon, then bundled up for a walk.  The afternoon high temperature was 43 accompanied by a moderate wind.  We followed a trail through the woods to exit the park.  We passed an ancient cemetery, one we discovered several years back.  One of the markers was a recent replacement stone for Increase Claflin, the first settler in Door County, born in 1795.  He would have been eligible to fight in the War of 1812.  I have no idea whether he did, but he could have.  There was also a marker for Asa Thorp, who died in 1907 at the age of 87.  There is a log cabin in Fish Creek said to be his home - sorry, no picture today.  I'll get one for you later.

The walk to town is a little over a mile.  It was too cold to bike.  We milled about for thirty minutes, hitting the daily double at the Confectionary and Dippy's Ice Cream Shop.  We also found a pair of double deer moccasins for Annie.  Her old pair had holes in the soles big enough to drive a truck through.  I have included a picture of a vintage Mustang for Dan.  He will be able to tell me the year of manufacture.  There is also a picture of another of Fred's far-flung mercantile establishments.  You'll recall that he owns a string of dollar stores in the deep south.  That Fred is an amazing guy.  Look out, Donald Trump, Fred is gaining on you.

So, we are settled in Harvey tonight.  The night promises to be colder than last night.  Tomorrow will be warmer than today and so, too, the rest of next week.  By then, this will be a place to be.

Goodnight.
