May 16, 2016. A Blue Horse, Fishermen and Birders.

May 16, 2016.  A Blue Horse, Fishermen and Birders.  Today was a decent day weatherwise.  We biked to Fish Creek and had lunch at the Blue Horse Café.  I promised you a picture of Asa Thorp's log cabin.  The cabin was built in 1849.  He started several commercial enterprises in the area and was called the "Founder of Fish Creek."

After lunch, we walked around the "downtown" area.  I put the word in quotes because the commercial area of Fish Creek consists of about five blocks along Main Street.  We made a visit to the fudge shop, of course, and the Barrel Room, a shop which sells salad dressing and various flavors of olive oil.  The Barrel Room is one of the area purveyors of Fat Louie's vinegar dressings and oils.  We don't know Fat Louie, but we like his olive oil.  Anyone who calls himself Fat Louie must be a pretty humble guy.  His products ought to be bought.

We ambled out and about Weborg Point this afternoon.  The fishermen and birders were out.  We have seen birders carrying their binoculars and cameras since we arrived.  The final picture above is a couple of birders who were attempting to photograph warblers.  I was amazed by the size of the lens on his camera.  He said it is a 600 mm lens with a doubler on it, extending its range to 1200 mm.  That is a powerful telephoto lens.  He said that warblers are migrating now and birders from miles away come to the park for sightings.

I recently saw a Nikon camera which zooms to 2000 mm.  That is the most powerful telephoto lens I have seen on a commonly available camera.  The birder told me he paid $600 for his lens in 1998.  I have no idea what its present value is.  However, the Nikon camera can be bought new from Amazon for the same price.  As I was telling the birder about the Nikon camera, his face dropped.  He seemed profoundly saddened that his behemoth lens is no longer state-of-the-art.  I think I ruined his day, so I didn't press the point and took my leave.

What will you be doing tomorrow?  You probably have a good idea.  You will be working or you have other plans for the day.  Me?  I have none.  I have absolutely no idea what we'll do tomorrow.  Maybe we'll do what we did today.  Maybe not.  After a lifetime of deadlines and agendas, this is fun.  I hope you get to experience freedom like this someday.

Goodnight.

I hope you are taking time to nap. The schedule you keep sounds exhausting! ;)
