May 8, 2016. The Beginning of Year Six. In May, 2011, Annie Farkley and I began our pattern of thrice-yearly, month-long road trips. Today, in May of 2016, we are on the road again, beginning our sixth year. We still enjoy the open road and quiet campgrounds. We will continue a while longer.
This trip is a repeat of prior spring journeys, with a twist. We are en route to Mackinac Island. We left home about noon today - yes, it took a little longer than usual. We have been away from home each of the last three weeks, so it took more time to turn things around this time. We are in Lincoln's Springfield, IL, tonight, a drive of about three-hundred miles.
After Mackinac, we will drive around the north side of Lake Michigan to Door County, WI. We are scheduled to spend about a week in Peninsula State Park. You have seen all the pictures from Fish Creek, WI, before. It will be a challenge to show you something you haven't seen.
We will then drive north and follow the southern rim of Lake Superior from Marquette, MI, to Duluth, MN. Time allowing, we may enter Canada and tour the west edge of the Lake to Thunder Bay. That will complete the circumnavigation of the Lake that we began with our trans-Canadian trip in the early 2000s.
The return home will track the Great River Road which begins at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. We'll turn off at Hannibal and hope to drive the southern half of the highway on a future trip.
So, that's the plan. We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, check in from time to time for updates. I'll have a piece of fudge for you on the island.
