May 21, 2016. Peninsula State Park to Gitche Gumee RV Park, Marquette, MI

May 21, 2016.  Peninsula State Park to Gitche Gumee RV Park, Marquette, MI.  We left the cherry orchards of Door county this morning and were stopped in Sturgeon Bay by a bridge which was raised to allow boats to pass underneath.  We changed time zones again on our way to Marquette.

There are three campgrounds near Marquette.  One is operated by the city, one by the Ojibway tribe and Gitche Gumee, an RV Park owned by Jeff Glass.  We passed on the first two and drove to Gitche Gumee.  Gitche Gumee is the Ojibway description for Lake Superior.  The campground is rough looking with gravel roads and a cable TV connection that doesn't work.

However, Jeff Glass is a charming guy and sort of a Renaissance Man.  He has owned the campground for 40 years.  Over those years, he has carved stones and engraved them with historical images, including the last chief of the Chippewa tribe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who penned the poem, "The Song of Hiawatha."  He has "stuff" all over which has significance to him.  He is, at present, adding a log addition to the office/residence using equipment that must be as old as I am.  His primary vehicle is a 1953 panel truck.  He replaced the original eight cylinder engine with a 350 cubic inch V-8.  Jeff told us that we were his first seasonal campers in the 2016 season.  He said he would take a picture of Harvey for his web site.

So, we are on the second leg of our three-legged spring trip.  From here we'll drive to Copper Harbor, MI, on a peninsula in Lake Superior.  The peninsula is known for its copper production, hence the name of the harbor.  At one time, according to Jeff, it was one of the richest areas in the United States.  We will then drive along the lake to Duluth and, perhaps north from there.

The Internet signal is very weak here.  It will get worse as we enter the wilderness along the lake.  It is likely that we won't be able to blog daily.  If you miss us, don't worry.  We'll be back when the Internet is available.

Until then, goodnight.
